Quebec might follow the lead of several other provinces that have outlawed smoking while driving with children.

The Quebec Liberal caucus adopted a resolution at a meeting in Laval on Sunday that called for the measure to be tabled in the legislature.

Health Minister Yves Bolduc said he supports the proposal, and he expects the same from opposition parties.

"It's an initiative that protects the health of minors given that we know smoking in cars produces a heavy concentration of smoke," said Bolduc, who doesn't expect smokers' rights groups to contest any such law.

"Smoking is a choice, but it's not necessarily a choice to make others sick because of cigarettes."

Earlier law

In 2006, Quebec banned smoking in public places, notably bars and restaurants, and intends to review the law in 2010.

Nova Scotia was the first province to ban smoking in a vehicle with a minor present, followed by Ontario and British Columbia.
