The Parti Quebecois government has named a well-known business magnate as the new chair of the board for Hydro Quebec.

Pierre-Karl Peladeau, who recently announced he is giving up his role as CEO of Quebecor on May 8, will take over the prominent post on May 15.

Peladeau approached the government regarding the position, and said that he would work for free on behalf of the government-owned utility.

Premier Pauline Marois said she was very happy to accept, saying she feels the province can benefit from Peladeau's business experience.

"I want that Hydro Quebec continues to contribute to the economy of Quebec, and to the economic development of Quebec, to the industrial policy of Quebec, and I think he is the best person at this place now," said Marois.

Peladeau is known for his agressive business style, and the premier hopes his business connections will allow Hydro Quebec to get a good price for its excess electricity.

Hydro Quebec is predicting a surplus of energy until 2027, and last year used that surplus to bring in $12 billion in revenue for the provincial government.

Energy minister Martine Ouellet said she would also like to see Hydro Quebec taking a larger role in transportation and development.

"[We want] Hydro-Quebec to have a more important role for electrification of transport, and also in industrial development," said Ouellet.

"We have a lot of electricity that we can use and we can use to develop the regions."

Peladeau will work alongside the CEO of Hydro Quebec, Thierry Vandal.
