A West Island man was seriously injured in Spain Saturday when he was struck by a metro car on a platform in Madrid.

On Saturday night, 35-year-old Jason de Belle was out with friends in Madrid when he was hit by the metro.

He sustained serious internal injuries, including a perforated lung from broken ribs. He will need surgery but doctors want to wait until his condition stabilizes first. He's currently in an intensive care unit in a hospital in Madrid.

His stepfather and mother are trying to get passports to go to Spain to be with him before the surgery happens. Family friend Jamie Myles created a GoFundMe page to help out the family.

“The immediate absolute thing is getting someone from the family to Madrid and some accommodation which may be for a few weeks and then it's going to be medical costs and rehabilitation and physio,” Myles said.

The page was started Sunday and as of Tuesday afternoon, almost $19,000 of the $40,000 goal was raised.

On Wednesday night, there will be a fundraising show at the Mariposa Café on Cote St. Luc Rd. at 5 p.m. where donations will be collected to help de Belle and his family.
