MONTREAL - It appears Michael Sam is ready to resume his pro football career.

The Alouettes said Friday that Sam has returned to Montreal and is expected to attend team meetings Sunday before resuming practice Monday. Sam abruptly left the club during training camp earlier this month without explanation.

The Alouettes placed Sam on their suspended list after his departure.

The six-foot-two, 260-pound Sam, the CFL's first openly gay player, signed with Montreal in May.

The 25-year-old was originally drafted in the seventh round of last year's draft by the St. Louis Rams before being released. Sam then joined the Dallas Cowboys but was let go.

The Alouettes also said quarterback Dan LeFevour will undergo shoulder surgery and could miss the remainder of the season. LeFevour dislocated his left shoulder in the third quarter of Montreal's 20-16 home loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.
