A 17-year-old boy is dead after one or more gunshots were fired in the parking lot of a high school in Sainte-Adele Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 1:10 p.m. outside Augustin-Norbert-Morin High School.

The Surete du Quebec said the shooting stemmed from a call they received about a stolen car. That led them to the back of the school where they found a man behind the wheel of the car reported stolen.

An altercation ensued, leading the young man to be shot and critically injured. He was transported to hospital, where he later died. Police say he attempted to run a police officer down with the car, which led to the fatal shooting.

The school itself was not directly involved, and neither were any current students, say police.

A student at the school told CTV Montreal he heard two shots and saw a young man lying on the ground, adding that he knew the boy, who he said was 17 years old.

Police would not confirm those reports.

Spokesperson for the Commission Scolaire des Laurentides Marie-Josée Lorionalso  confirmed that no current students were harmed in the incident.

Students were initially asked to stay inside the school

Parents were contacted by the school board, but those who which to contact police can do so at 450 240-6228 # 2008.

The case has been transferred to the Montreal police, as is custom when another police force is involved in a shooting incident.
