Two young people will be spending the summer behind bars pending a court date.

Police believe 19-year-old Sabrine Djermaine and 18-year-old El Mahdi Jamali planned to leave Canada to join a terrorist organization. They are both students at CEGEP Maisonneuve and were arrested in April on suspicion of terrorism.

Last month, a judge decided they didn't meet any of the criteria for bail release. They were denied bail because the judge wasn't convinced Djermaine and Jamali are not a flight risk and wouldn't re-offend if released on bail, even though the defence called 11 people to testify on their behalf, including their parents.

The defence says it wants to wait and see the extent of the crown's evidence in the case before it appeals but that won't happen until September when the two sides will be back in court.

A publication ban protects the information that's been revealed so far in court, but in April they were arrested by the RCMP initially as a "preventative measure". Five days later that they were charged with attempting to leave the country to commit terror acts, and possession of explosives.

Djermaine's lawyer says his client is just looking forward to having her voice heard.

“My client’s position is to … testify and offer a defence. We pleaded not guilty to the accusations and it’s her intent to maintain that plea,” said Charles Benmouyal.

The next step is to set a date for case management, which sets the stage for witnesses to be heard at the preliminary hearing.

If convicted, Djermaine and Jamali face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
