A few hundred Young Liberals set to meet at the annual conference have forwarded an agenda that would move the party to the left of the political spectrum.
The weekend meeting in Saint-August-de-Desmaures is being accompanied by a series of proposals that would, in their words, “propose a vision of equality of opportunity for the ambitions of a new generation.”
The Young Liberals propose to offer lower-earning Quebecers priority on state sponsored daycare spots and increase the total supply of daycare spaces in disadvantaged areas.
Among the 29 proposals in the 20-page booklet called, “A Quebec whose dreams are limitless,” is one that would increase time off work for parents of sick children to 120 days per child at 80 percent of their salary.
The new policies would also see parents of children under five get access to 13 weeks of unpaid leave from their jobs.
The Young Liberals also want to bolster funds for dealing with the homeless, increase the income threshold for receiving free legal aid and take measures to decrease the drop-out rate.
They also suggest reforms that would assist young pupils transition from kindergarten to grade one and help anglophones integrate into the economy.
