Three days of bail hearings have begun for two teenagers facing terrorism charges.
El Mahdi Jamali and Sabrine Djaermane were first arrested in mid-April, then charged several days later with trying to leave Canada to join a terrorist-related organization, possession of explosive materials, and having facilitated the actions of a terrorist group.
The couple is also accused of committing an act to profit a terrorist group.
Because Jamali and Djaermane are facing terrorism charges the onus is on their lawyers to prove they can be safely released into the community pending a trial.
However the hearings are subject to a publication ban, so the nature of the evidence being discussed and the names of those testifying cannot be revealed.
We can report that Jamali and Djaermane are being held in separate witness boxes and they are both handcuffed. Several family members are watching the hearings as they take place.
In recent months more than a dozen people have been arrested out of fears they were attempting to leave the country and join terrorist groups. About six are suspected to have left the country.
