Montreal police (SPVM) are investigating after a woman was stabbed in the Plateau neighbourhood on Monday afternoon.

Police say a 911 call at around 3:10 p.m. prompted officers to respond to St-Urbain Street near Marie-Anne Street.

The woman was located with injuries caused by an edged weapon to the upper body, police say.

According to SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant, the woman was rushed to the hospital and authorities initially feared for her life. Later, police reported that she was out of danger.

“Concerning her information, at this moment, there is a language barrier, which makes it hard for officers to obtain information on her identity. Once her condition improves, officer will attempt to get more information from her,” Brabant said.

Based on information obtained at the scene, police located the scene of the assault in an apartment near where the woman was located.

Witnesses also described a suspect who was seen leaving the scene, and officers soon located him.

A 29-year-old man was arrested near where the assault occurred and transported to a detention centre.

A perimeter is in place but St-Urbain heading south from Mont-Royal Avenue has reopened.

More to come.
