An increase in the number of drownings across Canada this year, with a particular rise in Quebec, has safety officials urging people to be more cautious in and around water.

According to The Lifesaving Society, 205 people across the country have drowned in 2010.

Quebec has seen the largest increase, with a total of 53 lives lost in water-related incidents.

Overall, 25 more people have drown nation-wide than one year ago.

The majority of victims are men over 18.

British Columbia has seen 11 more drownings than this time in 2009. Three more people have drowned in Ontario.

A spokeswoman with The Lifesaving Society, the group that keeps the statistics, says one possible explanation is that more people are swimming due to recent heat waves in Ontario and Quebec.
