Quebec’s Ministry of Environment says the borough of Verdun could face fines related to contaminated soil at an impromptu dump site on the waterfront.
A 500-tonne pile of dirt containing carcinogenic coal tar was dumped at the site but how and when it got there is unclear.
The ministry said it will send the borough a notice of non-conformity Wednesday, and that it's possible the borough could face fines.
The borough of Verdun said the dirt wasn't illegally dumped.
The pile is what's left over from excavation work on Lasalle Blvd.
The site is a former snow dump the environment ministry shut down due to the threat of contaminated water seeping into the river.
A private firm conducted tests on the soil for the borough in March. Those tests confirmed the soil was contaminated.
The borough only found out about the possible contamination risk two weeks ago.
The ministry has launched an investigation and says the borough will also have to ensure the site is cleared as soon possible.
