The controversial car service app Uber will be making its rides even cheaper.
According to a statement, Uber estimates that the price change will make UberX, which allows users to grab a ride with drivers with no taxi licence, up to 50 per cent cheaper than a regular taxi.
“As we have seen in Canadian cities before, when prices are lowered, demand among riders increases,” the company said in the statement. “But what we have found is that the increased demand turns into more efficiency for the driver, more trips per hour and more earnings for every hour on the road.”
The price change will see the base fare for uberX go from $2.75 to $2.50 and the per minute and per kilometer rates decrease by a nickel.
Rides in uberSELECT, which features high-end luxury cars, will fall from $2.40 to $1.85 per km and from $0.40 to $035 per minute, while maintain a $5.00 base fare. Rides in uberXL vehicles, which have higher capacities, will also keep a $5.00 base fare but will fall from $1.45 to $1.40 per km and from $0.35 to $0.30 a minute.
