MONTREAL - Thousands of people took to the streets of downtown Montreal Sunday to take part in a demonstration to support the survival of CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada.
Besides Montreal, rallies were held in Sherbrooke, Matane, Trois-Rivieres, as well as in Moncton, New Brunswick, to tell the federal government they've had enough with the cuts.
Radio-Canada employees, union members, and local politicians took part in the downtown march.
Successive cuts to the CBC/Radio-Canada, including layoffs, the closure of studios, and most recently the closure of North America’s largest costume studio, has worried defenders of the Crown corporation.
In June, the company announced it would slash as many as 1,500 jobs over five years. This comes after 657 job cuts were announced in April.
