The Canada Border Services Agency has seized nearly a quarter ton of suspected cocaine at the Port of Montreal, it announced Friday.

The drugs were found last Thursday, hidden in a container on a ship coming from Paraguay.

The declared goods were scrap metal. However, after receving information from international authorities, the CBSA conducted a search using X-ray technology.

Their inspection revealed the presence of a "dense mass" at the back of the container, according to a news release.

Inside were16 metal boxes holding 244 kilograms of suspected cocaine.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is investigating.

This is the third largest suspected-cocaine seizure in the past 12 months at the Port of Montreal, according to the CBSA.

In 2013, Canadian border services officers seized a total of 1,145 kg of cocaine.
