Quebec’s Culture Ministry has appointed a structural engineer to oversee repairs at the Mount Stephen Club.

The historic building on Drummond St. is being transformed into a hotel but it was learned this week the work has caused structural damage.

Engineers hired by the owners say half the lime-stone façade will have to come down to fix the problem.

Now, the Quebec government says that work will have to respect the heritage character of the building.

The owners have also been told to come up with a detailed plan for repairs.
