MONTREAL—Speed and alcohol are suspected in a “spectacular accident” early Saturday when a driver lost control and spun through the air, hitting a tree and lamppost before landing in an empty restaurant terrace.

Two people are in hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries after the 4:35 a.m. crash on Mont-Royal Ave. near the corner of Esplanade Ave. The small car smashed through the Le Filet terrace, rolled upside down and pinned itself against stairs.

First responders had to pry open the car to rescue the male driver and his female passenger, both were in their 20s.

Mont-Royal Ave. reopened to traffic just before 2p.m.
