Montreal and most of southern Quebec are no longer at risk after the threat of a severe thunderstorm.

Environment Canada meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms that could have produced very strong wind gusts, hail as large as a penny and heavy rain.

The warning has been lowered to a watch for most areas, including Montreal and Laval.

Warnings remain in place for the Eastern Townships, Lachute, Saint-Jerome, the Richelieu Valley, Saint-Hyacinthe, Vaudreuil, Soulanges and Huntingdon.

Less severe watches are in place for Montreal, Laval, Lanaudiere, Laurentians, Drummondville, Bois-Francs, Gatineau, Mauricie, Upper Gatineau, Lievre, Papineau, Mont-Laurier, Mont-Tremblant Park, Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Pontiac.

Thunderstorms will end this evening, Environment Canada forecasts. About 40 millimetres of rain is expected to fall.
