The search for a teen who went missing in the Chambly Basin last Monday has ended after search teams proved unable to find any trace of the young man.

Remy Nolet, 19, is believed to have drowned after his canoe capsized while returning from a restaurant with his friend Catherine Desautels, 17 on Monday May 4.

One of the two lifejackets floated away so Nolet saved Desautels' life by allowing her to take the remaining one.

A search for Nolet continued through Sunday but on a rainy Monday morning, the Richelieu police announced that they were discontinuing the search.

“He’s a hero,” Yanic Parent of the Richelieu Police force told CTV Montreal Monday morning. “We’ve been with the family and friends a lot last couple of days at the site. So for us it’s very emotional this morning to say we’ve got to stop. As police officers, we’re not used to that. It’s a very special case for us.”

Nolet's father Bobby Nolet said that he was approached by a man who offered $150 in funds raised for the family. But Nolet said that he knew of at least $400 that had been raised, so he told the man that he he expects the entire sum or else he would alert authorities.

Remy Nolet was widely lauded as a hero for his selfless gesture, which inspired a weekend vigil in his honour. Tributes rolled in, including from Desautels, who tearfully recounted how Nolet saved her life.
