Hundreds of relatives, friends and even strangers gathered near Fort Chambly to pay their respects to 19-year-old Remy Nolet Friday night.

Nolet disappeared on the Richelieu River Monday night when the canoe he was in capsized.

He was in the canoe with friend Catherine Desautels. There were two life vests in the canoe but neither one were wearing them.

In the frigid water, they clung to one of the vests until Remy told Catherine to put it on, and then he disappeared.

Friday night, Nolet was praised as a hero for saving Desautel’s life.

“I don't know Remy, but I felt very sad that this happened to him because I have two kids and I would die if that would happen to me. I just wanted to pay my respects to him,” said Chambly resident Jennifer Martin.

The vigil was organized by Remy’s older brother Yannick. His family is in mourning, but he said he’s trying putting on a brave face.

“I’m trying to stay strong. I have no choice. He’s a hero and an example for all,” he said.
