Jean Lapierre’s family members have released their first public statement since his death.

Lapierre, his wife Nicole Beaulieu, his two brothers Marc and Louis and his sister Martine died in a plane crash Tuesday in the Îles de la Madeleine. They were travelling to the island to attend Lapierre’s father’s funeral, who died Easter weekend.

Lapierre’s two children released their own separate statement, saying he was an “exceptional” father and grandfather. In October, Lapierre shared a photo on Twitter of himself gazing at his grandson Oscar.

The translated statements follow below:

"It is impossible to express all the pain afflicting our families since [the crash].

Faced with this terrible ordeal, we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has kept us in their thoughts and shared kind words following the deaths of our dear Jean Lapierre, Nicole Beaulieu, Martine Lapierre, Marc Lapierre and Louis Lapierre. Your messages give us courage.

Thank you, also, to the rescuers, medical personnel and residents of the Îles de la Madeleine who, by their professionalism and humanity, have shown dignity and a very touching solidarity and have brought honour to their fellow residents.

We are also saddened by the death of crew members Pascal Gosselin and Fabrice Labourel. Our thoughts are with their families."

"On a very personal note, we, Jean’s children, would like to say that we were very moved by the outpouring of love for our father, who was our rock, our hub, as well as an exceptional dad and grandfather.

Your thoughts will help us through the journey ahead.

Salut, salut, Dad.

We love you and your memory will live with us forever."
