A bank robbery led to a spectacular car crash in Mile End on Friday morning and police say one suspect is still at large.

At least two people were involved in the robbery, which occurred on Bernard Ave. near Hutchison at around 11:30 a.m.

The suspects fled in a taxi on Park Ave., heading south and then turned east on St. Viateur, then collided with another vehicle near St. Urbain.

Witness Roxanne Lemieux said she was sitting on the front steps of her office's building on Park when she saw several police cars go by. A cab then stopped on the street, with police surrounding it.

"That's when I saw the man in the back seat come into the front seat and pushed (the cab driver) out," she said. "It seemed like the cab driver was trying to escape the car at that point. He was half out of the vehicle when the robber pressed on the gas and the car went zooming down the street."

Lemieux said police took the cab driver to sit in front of a nearby grocery store and he appeared to be in a traumatized state.

Police said a woman suffered minor injuries in that crash but nobody else was hurt in the robbery or the collision.

They say one 35-year-old woman driving a taxi was arrested at the scene of the crash, and that one male suspect, believed to be armed, took off on foot and is still at large.

The woman is meeeting with police investigators to determine her involvement.

Natalie Sicard lives in the area and shot video of the aftermath of the crash. She said she saw a male suspect flee immediately after it happened.

"I never saw a guy run fast like that, and then the police got the girl who was inside, they took her out of the car, lying on the floor," said Sicard.

The emergency response team conducted searches of backroads in the areas but were unable to locate the suspect.

SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils said police are now trying to identify the suspect, who she described as a white male in his 30s, and asked for anyone with information to call 911. She added that while he is armed, police believe the man is not a high risk for harming others.

"We're looking for a suspect that is armed, but he's not armed to attack people," she said. "He was armed because he wanted to make a robbery."
