Police officers will wear their full uniforms for the funeral of former mayor Jean Doré, the Montreal Police Brotherhood has confirmed.
The brotherhood issued a news release Tuesday afternoon stating that it had received a formal request from the SPVM and intends to wear the regulation uniform for funeral events at the chapel and throughout the civic funeral.
Doré died Monday following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The police officers, who will be deployed to maintain order at the event, will wear the regulatory pants exclusively for the duration of events, the release confirmed, adding that officers would wear their red union caps as a symbol of their protests.
The police union has been wearing red caps and non-regulation pants – often camouflage pants or jeans – as part of a protest against contract negotiations.
The issue came to a head during the funeral of former premier Jacques Parizeau, when Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre complained that not wearing the regulation uniform showed a "lack of class."
