About 50 people and their dogs gathered in Quebec City Monday to protest a proposed ban on pit bulls.
Last month Mayor Regis Labeaume promised the animals would be banned from the capital city by the end of the year.
A week later he scaled back the plan, and said that existing dogs would likely to allowed to remain as long as they were proven to be safe.
As soon as Labeaume made his announcement he was subject to death threats, with dog owners comparing him to Hitler, or promising to sic their dogs on him.
Under current bylaws in Quebec City, the possession of Staffordshire Bull Terriers are forbidden.
Labeaume is proposing to extend the ban to several other breeds commonly known as pit bulls, including the American Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, crossbreeds, and dogs with similar physical characteristics.
There are roughly 300 pit bulls registered in Quebec, but officials suspect the real number of pit bulls is much higher.
