No budget cuts have been announced for Willingdon Elementary, and staff and parents associated with the school in NDG want to keep it that way.

On Thursday morning they formed a human chain around the school to protest possible budget cuts.

The protest organizer, science teacher Kathleen Usher, said she was inspired by the protests that have taken place around schools belonging to the Commission Scolaire de Montreal, and she expects other schools follow suit.

"I hope other English schools will join in and have a snowball effect. Our students love showing the love and the care they have for their school," said Usher.

School boards are facing budget cuts because the provincial government is not increasing spending in line with inflation.

Boards are considering a number of ways to deal with salary increases including increasing class sizes and cutting back on the aid given to students with learning disabilities.

"For them, looking ahead, I'm gravely concerned," said Usher.
