The Montreal SPCA has seized 35 large breed puppies and dogs from a kennel in the Lanaudière region.
After several inspections, the Montreal SPCA decided to seize the dogs for their health and protection.
The seized dogs were mostly huskies and husky mixes used for commercial breeding, dog sledding, and as guard dogs, according to a statement released by the Montreal SCPA Wednesday.
They spent most of their lives in substandard conditions or chained outside in a cage or crated in a house, the SPCA said in the statement.
The dogs were removed from the premises safely and are currently in the custody of the Montreal SPCA, where they are receiving attention and veterinary care.
Quebec Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Pierre Paradis has stated he plans to strengthen Quebec legislation on animal welfare to protect all animals in the province.
“We, at the Montreal SPCA, find the statements made by Minister Paradis very encouraging,” said Alanna Devine, director of animal advocacy at the Montreal SPCA, in the statement. “We believe that we are on the verge of seeing real changes for animals in this province, and we look forward to working with Minister Paradis and his team to help bring about these changes”
