A 34-year-old runner died Sunday after going into cardiac arrest at the Montreal marathon.

The woman, who was American, collapsed midway through the race and was brought to hospital where she later died, organizers say. Her name has not been released.

Another runner, a man in his 40s was also brought to hospital after he had a heart attack. He is in serious condition in hospital.

About 20 people required medical attention during the race and 16 were hospitalized.

More than 34,000 runners took to the streets Sunday for the 25th edition of the Montreal Oasis Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.
