The 18-year-old who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing injury to three of his passengers in 2010 is now out of prison.

At his parole hearing Wednesday, Laurent Raymond, now 22, said he was sorry for his actions and that he had great empathy for the courage the three women showed in their recovery.

In July 2010, 16-year-old Claudia Di Iorio, Evelyn Methot and Justine Rozon accepted a ride from Raymond in Town of Mount Royal. Raymond, who had been drinking, drove erratically and sped through stop lights before slamming into a tree.

Di Iorio ended up in a coma and almost died from an infection. Another passenger has to be fed through a tube for the rest of her life. Raymond left the accident with a broken leg.

Raymond was sentenced to three years in prison for his crime but only served one.

But Di Iorio’s father isn’t sure whether the time Raymond served is enough.

“My daughter has been through hell, her two friends have been through hell and that we have to live with,” says Nicola Di Iorio. He added that Raymond was laughing while driving the girls and that that behaviour is inappropriate.

“They were scared and that excited him,” says Di Iorio. “So obviously that is something that needs to be addressed.”

Raymond has been released with conditions including having to live in a transition house for six months and also doing volunteer work.
