More than 60 percent of snowmobile trails in Quebec are open, although some trails are not in good condition.
Quebec's snowmobile association, the FCMQ, says last week's heavy snow greatly improved conditions throughout the province, but notes there are still some areas where drivers should be cautious.
In particular, the group is warning drivers to be careful when using trails that cross water, pointing out that many rivers and streams have not frozen over yet.
Snowmobiles need a layer of ice at least 12 cm thick to support their weight.
Two people have died on snowmobile trails since the season began: one in Saguenay-Lac St. Jean, and the other on Quebec's North Shore.
Many trails throughout the Eastern Townships and the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region are closed, as are those in the lower Laurentians and areas southeast of Montreal.
The group expects the subzero temperatures that Quebec is currently experiencing will make more trails navigable.
