The Saint Sulpice Library building – a historic monument on St. Denis which has sat vacant for over a decade – will not be sold after all, not yet anyway.
The provincially-owned structure will instead be studied by a joint committee involving several provincial ministries as well as the city of Montreal to evaluate all options on its possible future use, according to a press release issued Sunday afternoon.
The province spent $3 million to repair the vacant structure eight years ago and spends $400,000 a year to maintain and heat the building, according to La Presse. The library was built a century ago and was classified as a historic monument in 1988.
“We will take the time to evaluate all the possibilities resulting from this joint initiative for the future of this jewel of our cultural heritage," explained Minister Helene David in the press release.
David serves as the Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister Responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language.
