Ted Bird, a familiar voice on the Montreal radio landscape, has left CHOM-FM after 17 years on the air.

Bird tells CTV News that he is leaving the rock station for unspecified personal reasons.

CHOM-FM vice president and general manager Martin Spalding says Bird resigned suddenly on January 1.

An internal memo released to CHOM staff says the veteran broadcaster had decided to pursue other challenges.

Bird is a longtime fan favorite who was voted most popular radio show host last year in a survey by the Montreal Mirror.

He says that his immediate plans are to sleep in and then decide the next step in his career.
