Montreal - Anyone hoping to snap up Paul Henderson's 1972 Summit Series hockey jersey is in for a fight with Canadian Tire.

The company said Wednesday it is looking at winning one Canada's most prized pieces of hockey memorabilia that is up for auction.

The Team Canada sweater went up for auction on the Classic Auctions website last month with an opening bid of $10,000 and Canadian Tire plans to submit its bid today.

As of Thursday morning, the highest of the 25 bids was $232,323.

Henderson wore the jersey when he scored the winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series against the former Soviet Union.

If its bid is successful when the auction ends June 22, Canadian Tire says it will take the jersey on a cross-country tour through its 480-store network and will loan it to sports and hockey museums such as the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
