Several homes were evacuated overnight as firefighters on the South Shore fought to extinguish flames in a long-nose truck.

The truck caught fire around 12:40 a.m. as it was parked on Terrebonne St. in Mercier.

As smoke blew from the vehicle toward several houses firefighters decided to evacuated the buildings as a precautionary measure.

The truck was destroyed by the flames, but firefighters were able to limit the damage from flames, however a neighbouring fence and pool were damaged by the heat.

Once the fire was put out the residents were allowed to return home.

Firefighters say an electrical fault in the block heater sparked the fire.
