About 200 people took part in a protest Saturday against Hydro Quebec’s smart meters.

Organizers say the installations represent “one of the worst economic, moral and health-related wastes Quebec has ever known.”

The problem, they say, is with the non-stop radio-frequencies emitted from the meters.

They say people who have had them installed outside their homes have reported suffering from health issues including heart palpitations, migraines, insomnia and nausea.

The first phase of the deployment of the meters, in the Montreal area, isn’t finished yet. Phases two and three, which cover the rest of the Quebec, haven’t been authorized and will be the subject of hearings in front of the Regie de l’energie next week.

The group, which calls itself “Refusons les compteurs intelligents” (Let us refuse smart meters), want premier-designate Philippe Couillard to stop the installation of any new meters and to remove the ones that have already been installed.

Hydro Quebec has said in the past that the meters are safe.
