Montreal’s caleche industry was the target of a protest at a downtown stable on Saturday.

Around 50 people showed up to denounce the use of horses on city streets, calling the industry cruel. Some protesters proposed replacing the carriages with electric ones.

Several of those who attended try to stop a horse and driver from leaving Lucky Luke’s stable, though both did manage to get through.

The industry drew fire after a video went viral in April showing one of the horses being struck by a car in Griffintown. Animal rights activists called on the city to outlaw the carriages. While Mayor Denis Coderre announced a one-year moratorium on caleches in May, he reversed course after an injunction on the rule was put in place by a judge who said the city had overstepped its powers.
