The Mayor of Montreal has unveiled his capital works budget for the next three years and it focuses heavily on road repairs.

Of the $5.2 billion budget, almost $1.5 billion will go towards better roads, though it's still unclear which roads will be re-done.

To put that in perspective, the city spent $730 million in 2013.

Critics point out that in the mayor’s previous capital works budgets, only 60 per cent of what was planned got done.

The opposition argues Coderre is making a splashy announcement about infrastructure at the same time the city is cutting staff that's responsible for coordinating roadwork.

“It's the easiest thing in the world to spend money like a drunken sailor. In order to do it wisely you need serious people and time and thinking ahead. And that only comes from the people you have in the operating section of the budget,” said Guillaume Lavoie, Projet Montreal’s finance critic.

The mayor insists this time more of the projects will be completed.
