Troy Perkins made a series of miraculous stops and the Brazilian Felipe Martins scored his second goal of the season, in the 14th minute, to finally get the Montreal Impact their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union at a rain-soaked Saputo Stadium in Montreal Saturday.
The Montreal Impact scored the game’s only goal after Patrice Bernier stripped Sheanon Williams of the ball in the 14th minute.
Bernier streaked down the left wing and shot from five yards outside the box. Philadelphia Union netminder Zac MacMath did his best to squeeze the ball but it slipped out into the box where Johnny-on-the-spot Martins kicked it home for the game’s only goal.
The Impact go to 1-4-3 with the win, played in front of a sparse crowd on the cold, wet afternoon in Montreal.
It was the Impact's first win since a 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia on Oct. 19 last season.
The Union (1-3-5) is winless in its last seven games.
It was Montreal's first home game on the grass field at Saputo Stadium -- after playing three times indoors at Olympic Stadium -- but the stands were only half full in chilly, wet weather even though the team announced Friday that 18,000 tickets were sold.
It was the first meeting between the teams since the Impact sent Andrew Wenger to the Union for Jack McInerney in a swap of strikers three weeks ago.
