The worst downturn for the Montreal Canadiens could lead to Coach Michel Therrien getting the boot.

CTV Montreal contributor Francois Gagnon reports that the Canadiens are on the verge of firing coach Michel Therrien unless the Habs beat the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

This comes as the Canadiens are stuck in their worst 21-game stretch since 1940.

It's stunning considering the Canadiens began the season with nine wins in a row, which is the best start to a season in the team's history.

As bad as it has been, Captain Max Pacioretty isn't ready to give up just yet.

"I've played this game for 21 years. I don't think one month, six weeks, is going to completely shatter my confidence, and I know everyone in this room feels the same way" he said.

"We know how to play. Our system has been flawless in the past when we've executed it properly."

The Canadiens have been doing well in several metrics -- with 49 shots Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues.

But Brendan Gallagher admits that if the team cannot chalk up wins, it doesn't mean much.

"We don't want anything to change. The only way that stays the same is if we go on the ice and perform," said Gallagher.

PK Subban said he and his teammates have faced a number of momentary lapses -- and that's not acceptable in the NHL.

"We just lose our focus and we're not prepared. We've got to be ready, and once the puck drops we have to be ready," said Subban.

"You can't just assume that good things are going to happen. You have to be ready."

Therrien, facing what could be his last game as coach of the Canadiens, did not seem worried by the prospect.

"It's going to be a fun game," he said. "We've got a big week ahead of us and this is a division game, and I'm more excited than anything."

John Scott will play

Meanwhile John Scott, who the Canadiens acquired last week and promptly sent to the AHL, will play in the NHL All-Star game.

The NHL allowed fan to decide who was going to play in the game this year, and Scott, who is known more for throwing punches than any other hockey skills, became a fan favourite.

Fans voted to make Scott the captain of the Pacific Division team in the All-Star game, and on Tuesday the NHL confirmed that Scott will in fact have that role.

The NHL All-Star game is on Jan. 31, 2016.
