Three Montrealers are being honoured this week for making a difference in the community.
The Quebec Community Groups Network is bestowing the Sheila and Victor Goldbloom Distinguished Community Service Awards on Marjorie Sharp, Eric Maldoff, and James Hughes.
Friends and former colleagues say Sharp has always been unstoppable.
"She's always interested in what's going on and encouraging people to do work," said Eleanor Beattie.
Sharp came to Canada as a tourist and ended up immigrating, finding work as a legal secretary before pursuing a degree in law.
When she began her practice as a lawyer she also threw herself into community work.
Sharp said that much of her community involvement is based on a simple idea.
"So I said, why not? And it was as simple as that! Yes, well actually a lot of things I've done have been, why not?"
Through her long career Sharp was a board member and president of the YWCA, and was constantly involved with Christ Church Cathedral and is affiliated groups.
Her devotion to others led to the creation of the women's shelter Auberge Madeleine, she helped establish L'Abri en Ville for people with mental health problems, and Elder-Aide for seniors.
"She not only creates the projects, she thinks about them, she knows what to do, she goes out and does it," said Joyce Blond.
Many people say Sharp's constant activity became a springboard for social change, and she continues to work and volunteer, especially at L'Abri en Ville.
The organization helps people with mental illness find housing and offers support.
"The house that I volunteer for, I get more from them because I'm busy I don't always have time," said Sharp.
"They phone me up and say 'we're going to the movies, would you like to come with us?' Do you know what a big step that is for somebody in that situation? I just feel so honoured."
Friends say Sharp deserves the honours now.
"I think she'll continue to go very strong. She's got the will, she's got the intelligence, she's got the energy," said Beattie, who sits on the board of L'Abri en Ville .
After a lifetime of selflessness there is one thing Sharp won't do: slow down.
"What would I do with myself?"
