A man in his thirties drowned Sunday while trying to swim in the Lachine Canal.
Several witnesses said the man got into the canal on his own on Sunday afternoon, but then disappeared under the surface of the water.
They called 9-1-1 around 4 p.m. and rescue workers rushed to the area near St. Patrick St. and Pitt St. in the Southwest Borough.
"We found the body of a 34-year-old male in the waters close to where he was last seen according to witnesses on the scene. Several witnesses appeared to have the same version of the story. They saw the male enter the water, it appears he was possibly trying to swim in the canal," said Montreal police officer Abdullah Emran.
The body was located around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
An autopsy will be conducted to see if anything else contributed to his death.
