A 12-year-old boy claims to have accidentally shot his 16-year-old brother in the head in a home in Dorval Monday afternoon.
Police said he was declared dead in hospital after suffering a fatal wound to the upper body. They would not say a gun was used in the shooting, nor would they confirm the boys are brothers.
Another police source confirmed they are in fact brothers, and also said the teenager was found dead in their home on the quiet, residential Hamilton Place in Dorval.
The boy said he retrieved the gun from a closet in his home, said the source.
The boy called 911 at 5:35 p.m. after the shooting, and also called his mother. The mother arrived at the scene and was later taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
Police said the boy is being questioned by investigators, though police were quick to note that they are not calling the death a homicide, adding that all options are open right now.
Because it was a violent death, police said they are following protocol by questioning the boy and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
