Health Minister Gaetan Barrette is standing by the provincial government’s plan to ban pit bulls.
Barrette came out in support of a ban on Saturday at a meeting of the Young Liberals in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures.
If the government does proceed with a ban, it will be despite advice against one from a working group that was tasked with examining the regulation of aggressive dogs. While the group’s final report isn’t expected for two weeks, a preliminary draft that leaked last week indicated the report will not recommend a ban. Rather, it will recommend a case-by-case approach and a law that would set conditions to owning potentially dangerous dogs.
