MONTREAL - Two men have been arrested following a fatal shooting in Mercier Tuesday evening.

A man in his 60s was shot at least once in the upper body as he exited his car on Jean-Tavernier St., near Pierre Gaulin St., just west of Langelier Blvd. at about 6:15 p.m.

La Presse is reporting that the victim is Gaetan Gosselin, 69, the former brother-in-law and associate of Reynald Desjardins, reputed to be linked to the Montreal Mafia and accused of the murder of Salvatore Montagna. Police would not confirm those reports. Gosselin is listed as living on that street.

One or more people fled the scene as nearby neighbours heard suspicious noises and called 911, said Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursiere.

At the same time, Lacoursiere said police received some information that led them to an apartment on Brunet Ave. in Montreal North.

Police cars flooded the area, where homicide detectives investigated.

They are trying to confirm if the arrest they made was directly linked to the homicide.

This is the 5th homicide of the year in Montreal.

Should the shooting prove to be Mafia-related, it would come after a slew of Mafia murders in recent months, including that of Desjardins's other brother-in-law, Mafia leader Joe Di Maulo, who was assassinated in front of his home in Blainville in November.
