When Canada takes the ice at the World Cup of Hockey in September, PK Subban will not be wearing the maple leaf on his chest.
The last additions to the lineup were announced on Friday and the Canadiens’ star defenceman was not among the players added.
Forwards Matt Duchene, Brad Marchand, Claude Giroux and Joe Thornton were selected, as were defencemen Brent Burns, Jake Muzzin and Alex Pietrangelo.
The Habs’ Brendan Gallagher, who won a gold medal for Canada at the World Hockey Championship was also left off the team, leaving Carey Price as the sole Canadien to make the roster.
Also snubbed was Alex Galchenyuk, who was not named to the Under 23 team.
Other notables who were not named to a roster included Phil Kessel, who will not lace up for Team USA despite helping the Pittsburgh Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Finals, which begin Wednesday. Kessel leads the Penguins in playoff scoring with nine goals and 18 assists.
Auston Mathews, who is considered the favourite to be drafted first overall in the upcoming NHL Draft, will play for the Under 23 team. Toronto holds the number one pick.
