A 71-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after his mother-in-law was stabbed to death in east-end Montreal.
Zine Elabidine Hajouji Idrissi appeared in court Wednesday to face that charge and a separate charge on assault. He remains in detention following the arraignment.
Police received a 911 call at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday about the attack on Beaurivage St. at Notre Dame St. E.
At the scene they found found an 88-year-old woman who had been stabbed in the upper body by a sharp object. She was transported to hospital in critical condition where she later died of her injuries.
The son-in-law had fled the scene in a car, but police located him a few blocks away and arrested him.
He was questioned overnight, and officers questioned him again Wednesday morning.
Neighbours say both people lived in the area for about 30 years, and described the suspect as good-natured.
"I'm in shock," said Christos Karteris.
"I never was going to suspect to see something like this happen tonight with this guy. This is a good guy you know. I don't know what happened."
