Six candidates are set to battle it out to represent the Parti Quebecois in a by-election in the Marie-Victorin riding.

The riding was left vacant after the resignation of MNA Bernard Drainville in June.

After the nomination period ended on Friday, the six candidates who filed their papers before the deadline were: Sophie Stanke, Catherine Fournier, Philippe Cloutier, Nicolas Dionne, Carl Gilbert and Mathieu Marcotte.

A nomination meeting will be held on Sept. 18 in Longueuil.

PQ Chairman Raymond Archambault said the large number of applicants is a sign of the party’s vitality.

In August, the Liberals picked Maryse Patenaude as their candidate for a riding traditionally seen as a PQ stronghold.
