Christopher Norman Jost, a convicted sex offender charged earlier this month with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman, has died in jail.

Jost was found unconscious Wednesday morning in his jail cell at Archambault Institution in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines.

Corrections officers tried to perform CPR on the prisoner, who was officially pronounced dead at the Cite-de-la-Sante Hospital at 10:10 a.m.

Details on the circumstances surrounding his death were not disclosed by the correctional institution.

The 46-year-old man was arrested in Brossard following an attack in early January in the basement of St. James the Apostle Church on Ste. Catherine St. at Bishop St.

The young woman said Jost lured her into the basement of the church where he forced her to fondle him.

Jost was a convicted sex offender, who was part of a rehabilitation program at the church.

He had a nightly curfew and was under the long-term supervision of Correctional Service Canada.

Court documents show in 2009, he pleaded guilty to breaching his conditions and was sentenced to 11 months in jail.

A Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued for Jost after he was suspected of the latest crime.

As in all cases where someone dies while in police custody, both police and coroner have been notified.
