MONTREAL - Still on a high Monday from her surge at the polls, mayoral runner-up Melanie Joly said her performance proves something – she matters.

“With 26 per cent of the vote, I have the legitimacy,” she said at a news conference Monday.

A confident Joly said she now has the legitimacy to debate important issues facing Montrealers and plans to meet with the leaders of the other opposition councils from all parties.

To make sure we coordinate our efforts to be a strong opposition,” Joly said.

With just four seats on Vrai changement pour Montreal - Groupe Melanie Joly and no seat of her own on council, however, Joly said she'll try to rectify that first, by running as soon as possible.

Joly said she has no regrets about the campaign she ran.

“I'm very happy with what we've done,” she told reporters, adding that her team's strong second place showing would have been stronger if not for two constraints.

“We didn't have enough time and we missed also a very big political machine,” she said, referring to her small team.

Before embarking on her next political move to shake up city hall, Joly said has more immediate plans.

“I'll take a bit of a vacation with my spouse over the next days, because I think I deserve it,” she said.
