Quebec’s Public Safety Minister Lise Theriault is temporarily stepping away from her duties for health reasons.

The announcement was made Thursday afternoon.  There’s no word on what health problems Theriault is dealing with, or how long she will be off for.

She has been a prime target in the National Assembly since news of allegations of systematic sexual, physical and mental abuse against First Nations women by Surete du Quebec officers came to light last week.

She cried during a news conference the day after the allegations came to light, saying she wasn’t made aware of the extent of the issue.

Theriault is also the minister responsible for the Lanaudiere region. Municipal Affairs Minister Pierre Moreau will take over for her while she’s gone.
