The city of Pointe-Claire has issued a letter to its residents highlighting the history of the company that illegally stored PCBs and its dealings with the city.
The city said the letter was issued in an effort to be more transparent about its dealings with Reliance Power Equipment Ltd.
The letter details the company’s history with the city, starting in 1967. In it, city council said it was shocked to learn about the PCBs and that it has taken action by demanding answers from Quebec's environment ministry.
Mayor Bill McMurchie said the city did what it could and now the issue is in the government's hands.
He also admits there are some holes in the facts about Reliant and its history.
“There are questions that we have relative to when and why and it’s really premature for us to try and fill those holes,” he said. “We still have a lot of research to do in that area and when we have that information, that will be conveyed to the citizens.”
He also said the focus is now on the cleanup efforts. The company plans to submit their cleanup proposal by Tuesday at the latest, Harry Baikowitz, a chemist hired by Reliance to act as a consultant told CTV.
