Pierre Karl Peladeau was in his opponents’ crosshairs Wednesday in the first debate for the five candidates vying for the leadership of the Parti Québécois.

Three candidates failed in their attempts to make Peladeau, the favourite in the race, explain his position on independence, the review of the anti-scab law, and the fact that Quebecor, the company he controls, operates in countries considered to be tax havens.

Bernard Drainville, Martine Ouellet and Pierre Céré slammed Peladeau for not answering their questions.

It was standing room only at the debate, which was held at the CEGEP Trois-Rivieres in front of audience of about 600 people. Some had to watch the exchange outside the auditorium on TVs.

The five candidates discussed the economy, public finance and the role of the state. The moderator was former journalist Gilles Gougeon.
